Pentecost (Shavuot)

Today I want to talk about Pentecost in the Greek or Shavuot in Hebrew. Most of us understand that Pentecost happened in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit was poured out. Actually the first Shavuot happened about 50 days from the very first Passover the exodus from Egypt.

Jewish tradition says that is when Moses received the Torah from Elohim. If we look at the exodus in scripture the timing seems to be biblically correct.

It is interesting to note how the people reacted to Elohim when He gave his instructions to the people.

Exodus 19:9 (NASB) 9 The LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.

Exodus 20:18-21 (NASB) 18 all the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. 19 Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die.” 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.” 21 So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.

Today do we do the same! Would we rather have the Man or Woman of God speak to us. Is it our sin that keeps us at a distance?

When we believe in Yeshua as our Messiah the Son of God who was raised from the Dead our sins are covered by HIS blood which enables us to come boldly to the thrown of Grace.

In Joel we see that the Spirit was promised long before the Disciples were even born.

Promise of the Holy Spirit

Joel 2:28-29 (NASB) 28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

Acts 2:17

Here we see that the promise was for everyone God was going to pour out His spirit to everyone no matter their status.

John the Immerser prophesied from where the Spirit God was coming forth from Yeshua.

Matthew 3:11 (NASB) 11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

After Messiah was immersed in water HE was immersed in the Spirit of God. That same Spirit that descended upon Him is available to all who believe in Messiah Yeshua

Mark 1:10 (NASB) 10 immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;

If Messiah received the outpouring of the Spirit how much more should we need the outpouring? Should we as believer seek such an outpouring daily in our lives?

Why do we need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit?

John 14:26 (NASB) 26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

John 15:26 (NASB) 26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

John 16:13-15 (NASB) 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

John 4:23-24 (NASB) 23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

John 7:38-39 (NASB) 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

You must believe In Messiah to receive baptism in the Holy Spirit. Most will be immersed in water before being baptized in HIs Holy Spirit.

Examples of His Holy Spirit being Poured out.

Acts 4:31 King James Version (KJV) “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”

Acts 8:14-20 (NASB) 14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!

The Holy Spirit is a gift from God with His Spirit comes power and authority to benefit the kingdom of God. You cannot earn or pay for any gift from God for like salvation it is a Gift.

Acts 10:38 (NASB) 38 “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

2 Peter 1:21 (NASB) 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

We need His Holy Spirit for Healing and deliverance to the body of Messiah. It is the Power of the Holy Spirit that does all these thing.

Baptism For all who believe in Messiah both Jew and Gentile

Acts 10:44-47 (NASB) 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

Acts 15:8-9 (NASB) 8 “And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9 and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith.

Acts 11:15-16 (NASB) 15 “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. 16 “And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

Acts 11:17 (NASB) 17 “Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”

How Many Are Standing in God’s Way of the Gift of the HOLY SPIRIT?

How many today deny that the gift of the Holy Spirit is for Today?

Is the Body showing the Fruit of the Spirit?

Have we been so afraid of the outpouring of the Spirit of God that we have depending on others to speak to us?

We need the Power of the Holy Spirit

Acts 19:6 (NASB) 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying

2 Peter 1:21 (NASB) 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 (NASB) 5 for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

1 Corinthians 4:20 (NASB) 20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power.
◾If you are a believer in Messiah Yeshua and you have never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit ask God for that gift today? Do not be afraid for the Holy Spirit is your Helper. He will remind you of Yeshua’s word to you he will bring conviction to your heart so you may repent. When you have the Gift of the Holy Spirit you will begin to show the gifts of the Spirit. Has you draw close to him he will draw close to you. Moses was not afraid he drew close to the Adonai and desired more

Pastors and Leaders have you been baptized in the Holy Spirit? Seek God for His will and ask for His Gift your ministry will come alive and you walk with Adonai will forever be changed

Do you need to be filled again? I believe as ministers we need to be constantly seeking Him because we need His Holy Spirit to minister His truth. Without His Spirit we have no power and no authority to do what we do.

Have you hindered the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your congregation because you are afraid of losing control?

Pastors and Leader this Pentecost (Shavuot) humble yourself before your Adonai and ask Him if you have gotten in God’s way concerning the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

This Shavuot seek Adonai for the outpouring of His Spirit encourage the congregation of Yeshua to seek the Gift of the Holy Spirit!

◾Father we need you gift of your Spirit to fall upon us. May we continue to seek out your Spirit to fulfill you will in our lives and encourage your people to be revived by you Holy Spirit. Forgive us if we have grieved your Spirit in any way. Bring conviction to us when we hinder you or grieve you. Help us to understand more fully your power and authority in our lives. May we grow and bare more fruit of your Spirit. Help us to continue to walk in your Spirit and not in the Flesh. May those rivers of living water flow from our innermost being to bring healing and deliverance to your people in you most precious and Holy Name Yeshua our Messiah Amen.
